JDRF Industry Discovery & Development Partnerships (IDDP)

The biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries are an integral, vital, and growing part of the search for a cure for type 1 diabetes. JDRF is focused on establishing partnerships with both pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to accelerate the discovery, development, and commercialization of disease-modifying therapeutics and devices to better treat and cure type 1 diabetes and its complications.

About the IDDP Program

The IDDP Program seeks to create partnerships with biotech and pharmaceutical companies focused on the discovery, development, and commercialization of therapeutics and devices for type 1 diabetes and its complications. JDRF industry funding can support programs or entire companies, public or private, that are aligned with our core research and strategic therapeutic objectives:

  • Restoring pancreatic beta cell function by regenerating or replacing beta cells
  • Reversing autoimmunity and restoring immunoregulation
  • Optimizing glucose control
  • Preventing and reversing diabetic complications
  • Developing biomarkers linked to beta cell mass/regeneration, islet inflamation, and the progression of diabetic complications

JDRF particularly encourages proposals: (a) to translate academic research discoveries with the goal of identifying more advanced therapeutic candidates, and (b) to conduct “proof-of-concept” testing of therapeutic candidates in relevant animal models or in people. The IDDP Program is focused on creating opportunities for JDRF to foster long-term collaborative relationships with industry, taking promising research through discovery and development, and toward commercialization.

IDDP Program Structure

JDRF funds applied research programs at both the preclinical and clinical stages of development. Collaborating companies must demonstrate a matching resource commitment to the proposed program that is equal to or greater than that requested from JDRF. Funded companies will be expected to enter into a research agreement with JDRF regarding milestones to be met in relation to anticipated funding, intellectual property, and JDRF participation in value creation. These will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

IDDP Application Process

Interested companies should contact Dr. Karin Hehenberger, Senior Vice President, Strategic Alliances at khehenberger@jdrf.org. Formal IDDP applications must be preceded by a letter of intent (LOI). Both LOIs and applications will be reviewed throughout the year on a rolling basis.
